The bodies of two young children have been recovered from a Minnesota lake, and searchers are still looking for a third body they fear may have been deliberately drowned.

Meanwhile, the children’s father died at various locations hours earlier, and their mother disappeared.

Their names have not been released.

The chain of events began Friday morning when the father was found dead at a mobile home park in Maplewood, near Minneapolis.

Police determined the woman had left with the children and began a search.

Maplewood Police Lieutenant Joe Steiner said the woman’s car was found near Vadnais Lake around 4 p.m. Friday.

Children’s shoes were found on the shore.

A search in the lake on Friday night found the body of a child.

A second body was found overnight.

Searchers from several groups were busy finding a third, as well as the mother, on Saturday.

Authorities believe all three children are under five years old.

“There is nothing more tragic than the loss of a young child,” Ramsay County Sheriff Bob Fletcher said at a news conference Friday.

He called the deaths “possible triple homicides”.
