One person was killed and four others were injured in a shooting outside a nightclub in downtown Sacramento early Monday, police said.
Police Chief Kathy Lester told the Sacramento Bee that authorities received a call about a shooting shortly before 2 a.m. Monday after a club let customers go.
The four injured were taken to hospital in stable condition, police said. The deceased was identified by the coroner’s office as Gregory Grimes, police said.

Authorities released little information about the shooting and asked witnesses to provide any additional information and submit possible video evidence.
“What we know right now is very limited,” Lester said.
Grimes is a 31-year-old former football star from Inderkum High School and Boise State University. He returned to high school to teach after college and started a human resources company last year, The Bee reported.
His mother, Deborah Grimes, told the paper that her son was killed while leaving the Mix nightclub and she did not believe he was the target.
“He’s never been on the street and doesn’t have that background,” she said, adding that he was looking forward to celebrating the July 4 holiday with his 4-year-old son. “You would never expect someone like him to be murdered. He’s just not fit for a troublemaker or anything like that.”
“I can’t explain how devastating this is now,” she added.
Police did not immediately disclose any information about the suspect.

It was the second shooting in downtown Sacramento this year. Six people were killed and 12 wounded in April shootings between rival gangs.
In that shooting, 100 shots were fired as people left bars and nightclubs in the downtown area, just blocks from the Capitol.

Sacramento, with a population of 500,000, has struggled to revitalize its downtown core, but the area has struggled with rising crime.
