Of course, technically speaking, the spooky season won’t arrive until October. But for some fans, it’s horror season all year round.
As summer heats up, it’s important to remember that while Michael Myers may only be stalking Haddonfield on Halloween, there are plenty of other scares to come during the warmer months. From classic movie theater frights to recent entries into the horror movie canon, summer frights have some delightful horrors.
We’ve compiled a list of the 10 best summer horror movies to watch while lounging by the pool. Get your popcorn ready – things are about to get scary.
‘jaw’
Often referred to as the first summer blockbuster, Steven Spielberg’s 1975 masterpiece takes inspiration from classic monster movies of the past to raise the fear factor to 11. With the help of John Williams’ iconic soundtrack and stellar performances from Roy Shedd, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss, Jaws helped establish the potential of a big summer movie (and our expectations).

‘midsummer’
It’s rare for a horror movie to be shot almost entirely in bright sunlight, or with such colorful photography. Ari Aster’s 2019 film starring the great Florence Pugh takes place in a twisted Swedish summer festival that turns deadly. But this eerie slow burn touches on emotional themes of grief, deception and revenge. Hopefully it won’t scare you off your next European vacation.

“alien”
The famous tagline for “Alien” is, “No one in space can hear you scream.” Well, there aren’t any seasons in space either, and since the movie originally came out on May 25, 1979 , we’ll unofficially classify it as a summer horror movie. Some will argue that “Alien”, the sequel to the 1986 action film, is better. Don’t listen to them. If the movie doesn’t make you nervous, you probably don’t have a pulse.

‘us’
Family on summer vacation in Santa Cruz, California, only to be followed by…themselves? Director Jordan Peele makes his Oscar-winning debut, “Get Out,” with this 2019 brain teaser. Violence can be brutal at times, but even with repeated viewing, “We” keeps you guessing and asking questions. Oh, and it includes one of the best choreographed fight scenes, the soundtrack, that has ever appeared in a horror movie.

‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’
How the film turned into a franchise with multiple sequels and side stories continues to be confusing and surprising. If you’ve seen Toby Hooper’s original 1974 film recently, you probably haven’t slept much since then. Marilyn Burns’ creepy scream at the end of the film is combined with the cannibal theme throughout for a veritable nightmare – and then leather-faced horror. The film was so horrific that it was banned in several countries, with the secretary of the British Board of Film Classification describing it as “horrific pornography”. So please watch carefully.

‘it follows’
Sometimes you find a movie, and when you’re watching it, you can’t help but think, “Yeah. That’s why I love horror.” David Robert Mitchell’s 2014 film is about an unrelenting A supernatural entity, it’s just…following protagonist Jay (played by Micah Monroe) in one of those movies. The simplicity of the premise (you can spread this horrible thing to another person as a sexually transmitted disease) is a perfect return to summer teen horror, complemented by a creepy, synth-heavy soundtrack that makes Reminds me of “Halloween” by John Carpenter.
Author’s Note: Upon further review, there are quite a few autumn leaves in this film. However, due to the inclusion of multiple pool/beach scenes, we’ll mark it as a late summer movie.

‘Friday the 13th’
We can’t forget this classic game from the 1980s. Is it cheesy? Absolutely. But the summer camp “make love or die” horror movie trope hit a relentless pace in the original “Friday the 13th.” Damn blatant, it’s a lot of fun watching OG movies in a series that spawned 11 sequels/reboots.

‘I know what you did last summer’
1997’s “I Know What You Did Last Summer” came out less than a year after Wes Craven’s “The Scream,” helping cement a new era of horror movies. A cast full of late ’90s heartthrobs (Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinz Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe) is swept away by a mysterious , the hook-wielding killer, the film’s time capsule is fun to stream on a hot summer night.

M. Night Shyamalan has had an interesting career to say the least. The world learned his name after The Sixth Sense in 1999, but in the years that followed, things were mixed. In 2002, however, the director gave us an alien invasion classic, The Omen. This summer thriller is paired with a family drama in which Graham Hess (Mel Gibson) desperately tries to keep his kids away from some not-so-peaceful aliens. Tension is real. As Roger Ebert said in his review, “I can’t think of a movie where silence is more terrifying and inaction is more disturbing.”

‘A Quiet Place Part II’
While the original film might have been considered a summer movie due to the amount of time spent outdoors, the repeated sweaters by the actors kept it out of the debate here. But 2021’s “A Quiet Place Part II” is all about T-shirts, tank tops and monsters that will tear you to shreds whenever you make a sound. The John Krasinski-directed film is the first box-office blockbuster after the surprise that most Americans were able to get a COVID vaccine and return to theaters.
