American TV star Oprah Winfrey’s father, Vernon Winfrey, has died at the age of 89.
The host confirmed the news in an Instagram post that her father died Friday in Nashville, Tennessee.
“My family gathered around his bed yesterday and I had the privilege of witnessing this man responsible for my life and holding his last breath,” the media mogul wrote. We can feel peace entering the room.”
Details about the funeral plans were not immediately released.
Earlier this week, Winfrey surprised her father by throwing a surprise barbecue for him on July 4 in Nashville.
Dubbed “Vernon Winfrey Day of Appreciation,” the event includes a barber chair in honor of his long career as a barber and nearly 50 years of having his own store in Nashville.
Vernon served on the Nashville Metropolitan City Council for 16 years and is a Trustee of Tennessee State University.
Winfrey spent her childhood in her father’s hometown of Kosciusko, Mississippi, and Milwaukee, with her mother, Vernita Lee, who died in 2018.
However, she also lived in Nashville with her father between the ages of seven and nine and when she was a teenager.
“If I hadn’t been sent to my father (I was 14 at the time), I would have gone in the other direction,” Winfrey told The Washington Post in 1986.
“I could have been a good criminal. I would have used these same instincts in a different way.”
