Archie Battersbee dies after his life support was removed

[ad_1]

Speaking outside the Royal London Hospital, his mother Holly Dance said her “beautiful little boy” died at 12.15pm today.

His family was by his bedside when his ventilator was turned off.

Archie’s parents have been engaged in a long legal battle over stopping treatment, and in recent days have filed applications to the High Court, the Court of Appeal and the European Court of Human Rights to have him transferred to a hospice to die.

Ms Dance, of Southend, Essex, announced her son’s death to the media, saying “he fought until the very end”.

“All I can say is, I’m the proudest mom in the world,” she said through tears.

“He was a very beautiful little boy who fought to the end and I’m proud to be his mum.”

A final plea to the European Court of Human Rights to intervene in the case late on Friday was rejected after the High Court ruled he must remain at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel, east London.

Archie’s parents have been engaged in a long legal battle over stopping treatment, and in recent days have filed applications to the High Court, the Court of Appeal and the European Court of Human Rights to have him transferred to a hospice to die. However, the request was denied.

The 12-year-old boy has been in a coma since he was found unconscious by his mother in April and has been kept alive by medical interventions including ventilation and medication.
