Sammy Boyd is the epitome of the music and entertainment scene at Asbury Park.
Sammy, a promoter and restaurateur, is a good friend of mine, he passed away this week Died at age 75. His passion and love for the revitalization of Asbury Park is in the spotlight as he has served on numerous committees and boards overseeing the good changes taking place in the bustling Jersey music capital.
His love for music and entertainment can be seen from his bringing top music and entertainment acts to Asbury Park. Music legends such as Ronnie Spector, Darlene Love, Tony Bennett, Frankie Valli, Gary US Bonds, Southside Johnny, The Weeklings Denny Laine from Wings, Tommy James, Rascals from Mountain Felix Cavaliere and Leslie West from Pat Guadagno, just to name a few a few cases.
I’ve had the privilege of hosting many of Sammy’s shows. It’s always cool to see him and his classic smile backstage, even in the midst of the little messes and issues that always happen when promoting the show.
When asked to help someone in need, Sammy is always the first to step up. When Hurricane Sandy hit, Sammy lent his talent and time to organize several shows to raise money for those hardest hit by the devastation.
His presence and time are always welcome at Asbury Park Lakehouse Academy, which provides music lessons for underprivileged youth and skills for dealing with the music industry.
He is a member of the St Patrick’s Parade Committee in Asbury Park and will help organise before and after events to raise funds for the parade.
It’s always a pleasure to be with Sammy. I especially enjoyed going to Kim Marie’s in Asbury Park with him and his business partner Judi along with the band members and others after the show for snacks, cocktails and laughter.
When I was doing TV shows in Asbury Park, he supported me and would go to the shows I was hosting, and he wasn’t directly involved because he liked music and entertainment.
He opened Marusco’s Tomato Pies in Asbury Park, a great pizzeria named the best pizza in Asbury Park in 2021. I was on a diet, my show was on, and he brought a big pie. Of course, my diet exceeded expectations and my staff enjoyed a special treat from Sammy.
Sammy is generous with his time, loves supporting local New Jersey artists, and is a true business legend. I am honored to meet him. My heart goes out to his beautiful wife Erin, his family, friends and Judi of Sammy Boyd Entertainment, and thank you for sharing Sammy with the rest of us.
