A reckless motorcyclist who knocked down a pedestrian on a road in Abu Dhabi has been instructed to pay the victim Dh60,000 in damages.

A motorist was riding a bicycle without turning on his headlights overnight and accidentally hit a pedestrian.

The Abu Dhabi Court of Appeal for Civil and Administrative Claims directed the man to pay compensation to the victim after he was convicted of an accident causing pedestrian injury.

Official court documents say the pedestrian has filed a lawsuit against the motorcyclist and the company he works for, demanding they pay him Dh100,000 for physical, material and mental damages he suffered as a result of the rollover accident.

The plaintiff explained in the lawsuit that the defendant was negligent and reckless while riding the motorcycle. The man said despite riding on a dark road at night, the motorcyclist did not turn on his lights, causing him to run over him and seriously injure him.

A medical report said the victim suffered severe head injuries, bruises all over his body, minor bruises to his chest, a shock to his right calf and a fractured right tibia.

The man said he also lost his job due to the accident and suffered psychological problems.

The Abu Dhabi Court of First Instance had earlier found the accused guilty and fined him for causing the accident.

The judge also ordered the motorcyclist and the company he worked for to jointly pay the victim Dh30,000 as compensation for all his losses, and rejected other demands.

The complainant challenged the Civil Court of Appeal’s decision, which increased the plaintiff’s compensation amount to Dh60,000.

The defendant will also pay the victim’s legal costs.
