The death toll rose to 47 after fighting between Israeli and Gaza militants over the weekend left a man wounded and killed in violence, the Gaza Health Ministry said.

Israeli planes hit targets in the Gaza Strip, and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad fired more than 1,000 rockets in three days of fighting in the worst cross-border violence since last year’s 11-day war with Hamas.

Among those killed were 16 women and four children, according to the health ministry, as well as two senior Islamic Jihad commanders, one of whom Israel said was trying to stop an imminent attack.

Rockets fired by Palestinian militants may have killed as many as 16 people.

It is unclear how the man who died Thursday was injured.

The fighting disrupted the lives of hundreds of thousands of Israelis.

Israel’s advanced Iron Dome missile defense system shot down many rockets bound for Israel, and no Israelis were killed or seriously injured.

A ceasefire on Sunday night ended the fighting.

Over the past 15 years, Israel and Gaza’s radical Hamas rulers have fought four wars and several smaller battles that have taken a staggering toll on the region’s 2 million Palestinian residents.
