Harness racing. The Illinois State Fair is hosting a harness race on Thursday to kick off the grandstand calendar on Thursday, Aug. 11. Billed as one of the fastest race tracks in the world, the one-mile track will host a race sponsored by the Illinois Department of Agriculture on opening day. Every horse that takes to the track is either Illinois or born. The Harness Contest will offer a scorecard with the first posting at 12pm and the second at 5pm. picnic. The Walnut Rotary Club will be hosting a pork chop sandwich picnic at Veterans’ Memorial, Jackson St. and S. Main St. in Walnut on Saturday, August 13th from 10am-1pm. Donations will be accepted during the picnic.
151st Whiteside County Fair. Opening Tuesday, August 16 at the fairgrounds at 201 W. Winfield St. in Morrison. The schedule for the opening two days.Tuesday: Happy Horse Show, 9am, Children’s Tractor Pedal Pull, 2, Open Pig Judges at Noon, Junior Pig Judges 4:30, Professional Bull Riding 7. Wednesday: 8am Exhibit Barrel, Western Horse Racing Speed Race and Cow Judges, 9. Professional horseback riding at 7pm
Sterling Rock Falls Historical Society. The film “Sons & Daughters of Thunder” will be screened Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Lincoln Learning Center, 611 Sterling E. Third St.. This film about Harriet Beecher’s introduction to America’s 19th-century abolition movement includes scenes shot at the Dillon House Museum.
