Ashes of Covid victims brought home to Kerala from UAE 2 years after death

[ad_1]

DUBAI: The remains of the Kanyakumari local who died in Dubai two years ago will finally be brought to his hometown soon for final ceremonies.

Now, with the help of two Keralas who stumbled across the plight of the bereaved, this has become possible.

COVID-19 took Rajkumar Thankappan’s life on May 14, 2020 in the UAE. Rajkumar was cremated there because it was difficult to repatriate remains at the height of the pandemic, especially with flights banned around the world.

Sadly, Rajkumar’s wife passed away sometime before his death, leaving the couple’s children in India distraught and helpless.

Kottayam local Sijo Paul learned through a message on a WhatsApp group that the couple’s children wanted to see at least their father’s ashes.

Sijo then decided to procure the ashes. He got all the papers from Rajkumar’s hometown, went through the formalities and got the ashes. But he was unable to return home due to lockdown restrictions and subsequent job changes.

Manorama Online has reported that Sijo wants to make sure the ashes are brought to Rajkumar’s children.

Subsequently, Al Ain’s paramedic, Tahira Kallumurikkal from Kozhikode, Kerala, came forward to help.

Tahira was given permission to bring the ashes to Rajkumar’s hometown. Then, all the rigorous procedures to bring the ashes back to his hometown were completed and permission was granted on Thursday.

Sijo will keep the ashes until Tahira begins her journey.

A Covid frontline fighter, Tahira has written a book, “Ee Samayavum Kadannu Pokum” – meaning this time too will pass – about her experiences during the pandemic. She has handed over the money she received from book sales to educate Rajkumar’s son.

The children of the deceased thank the two Keralas who did so much for the family of a man they never met.
