Paraguay’s vice president resigns over corruption allegations

[ad_1]

Paraguay Vice President Hugo Velázquez announced his resignation on Friday after he was charged with corruption by the United States of America (US).

“I resigned because I had to prove my innocence,” he said in an interview with ABC Cardinal Radio, quoted by Actualidad RT.

Likewise, he announced that he will officially leave the post next week.

Similarly, Velázquez also gave up his candidacy for the presidency of his ruling party, the Colorado Party, to run in next year’s Paraguay election.

“I ask Paraguayans with a clear conscience. Given the statement from the Embassy of the United States of America government, I declined to run to prepare my defense and focus on protecting the good name of my family. It has been decided to do so,” the current former vice president tweeted wrote on the special account.

He also confirmed his decision to step down as vice president on his Twitter account.

He added in his publication on the social network: “Our fight for a country with social justice and opportunity for all will continue through the large numbers of true Coloradoans in the Republican army who will continue to defend Bernardino Cava General Lero’s founding ideals.” . ,

Alleged corruption charges

The United States has accused Velázquez of paying more than $1 million in bribes to a Paraguayan official who is investigating him.

Little is known about the nature of the case. For the United States, however, the investigation “threatens the vice president and his economic interests.”

The announcement against Paraguay’s vice-president comes weeks after the United States accused the South American country’s former president, Horacio Cartes, of “serious corruption”.
