Chinese President Xi Jinping plans to meet U.S. President Joe Biden in November 2022

[ad_1]

Beijing, August 13: Chinese officials are planning to have President Xi Jinping visit the Southeast Asian country in November and meet with U.S. President Joe Biden, according to The Wall Street Journal. The visit comes after U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan angered the Chinese government, which responded by launching military exercises around the self-governing island.

The visit will mark the Chinese leader’s first international visit in nearly three years and his first face-to-face meeting with Biden since the U.S. leader’s inauguration. According to the publication, preparations for the trip show Xi Jinping is confident in his fate at the biannual national congress scheduled for this fall, where he is expected to break recent precedent and demand a third Served as General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.

The Chinese leader is expected to wrap up the party congress first and then possibly attend the Group of 20 leaders summit in Bali, Indonesia, on Nov. 15-16. In two days, Xi is expected to travel to Bangkok, the Thai capital, for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, they said. China is uneasy as Pakistan under Sheikh Baz Sharif’s government moves closer to the United States.

Those plans, however, could change because it is still in the early stages, and part of the preparations is for a meeting between Xi and Biden that could take place during one of the two summits, the people said.

“China supports Indonesia and Thailand as the hosts of the two meetings, and is willing to work with all parties to push for positive outcomes,” China’s foreign ministry said in response to a Wall Street Journal question about Xi’s possible visit to China.

Meanwhile, the White House said the two leaders discussed a possible in-person meeting on a recent conference call and agreed to have their teams follow up to sort out the details. The official declined to provide details on when or where, according to the Wall Street Journal.

In recent days, when Pelosi visited Taiwan against China’s wishes, Beijing began holding large-scale military exercises while threatening to take over the self-governing island. After more than a week of training near Taiwan, China on Wednesday announced the end of military exercises simulating an attack on the island.

The PLA’s Eastern Theater Command said it successfully completed various tasks in the recent exercise in Taiwan, effectively testing the troops’ joint combat capability, according to the state-run Global Times.

The Chinese military said it would organize regular combat readiness patrols in the Taiwan Strait.

China has defended its massive military exercises and airspace violations in the East and South China Seas, saying it is preparing for every possible scenario after Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan. US scientists have found antibodies in monkeys that could be used to develop a COVID-19 vaccine.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan is a major provocation for the escalation of U.S.-Taiwan relations and poses a real threat to China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. China must be fully prepared.

Most recently, on Friday, Taiwan’s Defense Ministry spotted as many as 24 Chinese planes and six ships near its territory, two days after China halted large-scale military exercises near the self-governing island.
