Don’t photograph dusty weather while driving, Abu Dhabi police say

Abu Dhabi police warn motorists about dangers of using mobile phone filming dusty weather conditions when behind the wheel.

“Due to low visibility in high winds and sand, motorists are urged to exercise caution. For your safety, please do not be distracted by filming any video or using your mobile phone,” Abu Dhabi Police said in a tweet.

More than 105,000 drivers were fined for distracted driving in the first half of this year.

Offences such as using a mobile phone while driving or eating, drinking and smoking are punishable by a Dh800 fine and four black points.

“Motors may become distracted while using their mobile phones to send WhatsApp messages or browse social media platforms or take pictures. Distraction can lead to serious accidents and deaths,” Abu Dhabi Police said in a recent safety notice.

Distracted driving can cause drivers to swerve into other lanes or suddenly reduce speed, putting themselves and other road users at risk.

Data on the ministry’s website shows that distracted driving, swerve between lanesand failure to maintain a safe distance between vehicles tops the list of traffic offences recorded in the UAE in 2021.

The ministry shared a message online on Sunday urging motorists to obey speed limits, stay in their lanes, refrain from using hazard lights and maintain a safe distance between vehicles.
