Pakistan celebrates milestone day
Celebrations are being held across Pakistan to mark the anniversary of its independence from British rule.
On August 14, 1947, the last Governor of British India and the first Governor of the Dominion of India, Lord Louis Mountbatten, handed over power to the founding father of Pakistan, Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
Jinnah was the head of the All India Muslim League, which in the 1940s led to growing demands for an independent homeland for South Asia’s Muslim minority as violence between Muslims and Hindus increased.
Under the Mountbatten Plan approved earlier in 1947, Pakistan was created in the northwestern and eastern parts of the British-ruled Indian subcontinent, while the rest became modern India.
