A man has been arrested after being shot in the boarding area at Canberra Airport in Australia.
The airport was evacuated and planes were grounded for about three hours on Sunday afternoon as police recovered their guns and inspected the area.
No casualties were reported, but footage from the scene showed bullet holes in the terminal’s glass.
Police said the arrested man was “believed to be the only one responsible” but his motives were unclear.
ACT Police Acting Superintendent Dave Craft said the suspect had been sitting near a glass window in the departure check-in area.
“About five minutes later, the male removed the gun from his property and released about five bullets,” he said.
“From what I saw at the crime scene, the man had shot through the terminal glass.
“No shots were fired at people … customers or employees.”
‘The expressions on people’s faces are horrible’
ABC reporter Lily Thomson heard gunfire at the airport and when people started screaming “run” she realised something was wrong.
“I saw this grandmother with her baby with a look of fear on her face and I knew it was serious,” she said.
“So we all ran away and I stayed with the grandmother and her baby behind the information desk. We stayed there for a few minutes until security told us to evacuate to the car park.
“Everyone was hiding behind chairs, people were running.
“It’s horrible. We don’t know what’s going on. The expressions on people’s faces are horrible.”
