Asia to lead the way in increasing global refinery hydrotreater capacity

GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company, said Asia is expected to achieve the highest capacity additions in global refining hydrotreaters between 2022 and 2026, accounting for around 39% of total capacity additions in 2026.

GlobalData identified the Middle East as the second largest contributor to global hydroprocessing unit capacity additions, accounting for 29% of total capacity additions by 2026. Iran is expected to account for most of the new capacity added in the region, with a capacity of 962 mbd. Four new and one expansion projects are expected in the country by 2026.

GlobalData’s latest report “Refinery Hydrotreater Capacity and CapEx Outlook 2022-2026 and Details of All Operating and Planned Units” shows that total hydrotreater capacity in Asia could increase by 4.18 million b/d by 2026 Day (mbd) . Of this, 2,548 mbd is likely to come from new refineries and the rest is expected to come from expansions of existing refineries.

China and India top the list

Teja Pappoppula, Oil and Gas Analyst at GlobalData, commented: “By 2026, China and India will account for 74% of the new hydroprocessing capacity in Asia. India’s Vadinar refinery is the largest upcoming expansion project in Asia with a capacity of 374 mbd Capacity additions are expected by 2024. Among the new refinery projects, the planned China Yulong Refinery could add 383 mbd of capacity in 2023.

Pappoppula added: “Africa ranks third globally, contributing around 17% of global hydrotreater capacity additions. The planned Lagos I refinery in Nigeria is likely to be one of the largest contributors in the region and is expected to It will be operational in 2023 with a capacity of 410 mbd.”- arab trade news agency
