World News | Nepal seeks permission to export additional 111 MW of electricity to India

KATHMANDU, August 21 (PTI) Nepal has proposed to sell an additional 111 MW of surplus power to India through its electricity trading market.

NEA managing director Pradeep Thike said on Sunday that state-owned electricity utility Nepal Electricity Authority has submitted a proposal to India’s Central Electricity Authority to sell electricity produced through four hydropower plants: Misrikhola, Likhukhola, Solukhola and Chilime hycropower.

NEA will be able to export additional electricity to India after obtaining permission from the Central Electricity Authority of India. Currently, Nepal has exported 364 MW of electricity to India through open competition.

In the first month of the fiscal year, nearly Rs 1.84 crore worth of electricity has been exported to India.

From June 2, NEA began to sell surplus power at competitive prices on the day-ahead market of the Energy Exchange of India Ltd (IX).

Initially, Nepal exported 39 megawatts of electricity per day from two power plants to the Indian Energy Exchange (IX). Since June 10, 364 megawatts of electricity produced by six hydropower plants has been sold in the Indian market every day at competitive prices.
