Maritime technology company Navtor has launched what it considers a “transformation tool” for navigators, introducing an advanced auto-routing module into its NavStation digital charts.
This enables bridge officials for the first time to calculate routes, not just from port to port, but “point to point” in seconds. Detailed itineraries, which can be refined to the exact needs of the vessel and voyage, are instantly available and can be seamlessly updated, compared and shared.
Navtor’s marine consultant Johan Stensaker said the development “hit the home run” for today’s busy sailors.

“It’s something that’s been on the industry’s ‘wish list’ for years…in fact, we’ve been thinking about and developing this concept for almost a decade,” he revealed. “This is the first maritime auto-routing application with this level of user-friendly functionality. Not only does it reduce the administrative burden and automate time-consuming tasks, but it also allows navigators to pinpoint the exact location – their vessel – with ease and the berths they want to reach – and block specific passages, port entrances or straits as needed.

Now available, the module is based on providing the shortest route from port to port, waypoint to waypoint, current vessel position to port, or from any given point to the vast majority of docks and berths in most major ports. Change or compare routes at the touch of a button, with options such as adjusting deep/shallow routes and adding additional ports of call. Consider all restricted areas, traffic segregation schemes (TSS) and other key criteria.
