The University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) is offering university students a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity as they attend a five-day fully paid training camp at CNN Academy in Abu Dhabi this September.
UNM’s School of Media, Languages and Cultures (SMLC) announced the partnership in 2022 as an optional module on the current MA Media, Communication and Culture syllabus, which is popular despite the Covid-19 pandemic welcome.
At the same time, students can also choose to combine the CNN module with other media and communication modules such as “Issues and Challenges in Contemporary Media” and “Working in Mass Media and Cultural Industries”.
Also known as the Sprint Program, the media boot camp is curated by newsgathering, digital and programming teams involved in CNN’s flagship current affairs show – Connecting the World with Becky Anderson – which airs in Abu Dhabi.
Through the 20-credit module, students will learn the fundamentals of news production, and hot topics in today’s digital-first media environment, and the module will also provide a practical educational element to familiarize students with the fundamentals of storytelling and production.
What’s more, students will learn how to find, sell, and make stories.
They will also learn SEO and multi-platform storytelling, as well as verify, confirm and report breaking news, in addition to writing for TV news while being supported by CNN staff.
During the course, students will use their smartphones to market, shoot, and edit content before presenting their work to CNN’s panel of judges.
Towards the end of the Sprint course, students will have a better understanding of how newsrooms work, and they will also have the opportunity to meet and discuss new issues with CNN Abu Dhabi’s executive editor and popular news anchor Becky Anderson.
Additionally, they will receive a CNN Storytelling Academy certificate.
This is not the first time SMLC has gone above and beyond, adding value to the educational experience and enriching the lives of its students.
The school previously organized a five-day Korean language course with CJ Jeiljedang, a leading Korean food company, as well as writing workshops and various cultural and creative workshops.
