The Al Sadeem Observatory in Abu Dhabi said the star is the second brightest star in the night sky and is easy to spot.
Its website says: “There is no other star in the Arab world more anticipated than Suhail (or Canopus in the West), because according to folklore it finally marks the gradual beginning of cooler days in the desert.
“In addition to helping early Arabs understand the changing seasons, the star was a reliable navigational tool for ancient sailors and travelers.”
This year has been basically a typical Emirati summer with temperatures in excess of 40°C.

Sohail stars in Emirati culture
In Emirati culture, the presence of Suhail is considered “a harbinger of abundance and all good things”.
The Observatory said the star represents the first day of the UAE’s so-called Sukhari year, which is divided into 14 seasons and was based on fishing, pearl hunting and farming in the past.
“Suhail is also very prominent in Emirati art and literature, often depicted as a symbol of love and purity of heart,” the Observatory said.
“The great blind Arab philosopher Abu al-ʿAlaʾ al-Maʿarri frequently used Suhail in his writings for the same reason.”
