Abu Dhabi’s future energy company, WiSER, will host a six-day field workshop for young female professionals in Rwanda’s Gatsibo district as part of an initiative to mark Emirati Women’s Day.
The workshop, titled “Rural Energy Access: Designing and Implementing Inclusive Community Energy Systems,” had 14 participants interested in renewable energy and energy access.
Through a combination of short lectures, hands-on projects and community interactions, participants will learn how to design off-grid renewable energy systems to support and promote community development.
The workshop, which ends on 28 August, will be held in collaboration with the capacity building organization Energy Action Partners.
Dr Lamya Fawwaz, Executive Director of Masdar Brands and Strategic Initiatives and Project Director of WiSER, said: “Our upcoming Rural Energy Access course is just one of many initiatives for Emirati women to inspire them to take an active role in problem solving globally. Sustainability Challenge.”
The workshop ensures that young women have practical experience in rural energy access, which can improve their understanding of the complexities of this critical work challenge.
Efforts like this workshop aimed at increasing the active participation of women in the energy sector have a knock-on effect. Research shows that increased female participation expands the talent pool in the clean energy sector, and that active participation of women in the deployment of off-grid renewable energy solutions can improve sustainability and gender equality.
