ABU DHABI, 29th August, 2022 (WAM) — Although the Latin American countries Chile and the United Arab Emirates are two far-flung countries, certain common characteristics, such as “openness to the world and empowerment of women”, make the two countries one of the most A natural ally, becoming a top Chilean diplomat told the Emirates News Agency (WAM).
Patricio Diaz Broughton, Chile’s ambassador to the UAE, said: “One of these essential characteristics is openness to the world…openness to investment…creativity, innovation and new technologies etc.,” he added in an exclusive interview with WAM at the Chilean embassy in Abu Dhabi that Chile wants to strengthen and expand its relationship with the UAE in these areas of natural connection.
Another common feature is the promotion of women’s empowerment, as both countries work to strengthen women’s participation in society, the economy and leadership, stressed Broughton, who served as ambassador in early August.
As a career diplomat, he has served in Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, Venezuela, Argentina, Paraguay and the United Nations. Prior to his current position, he was Director of the Middle East and Africa Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile.
Prospects for CEPA
As the two countries launched negotiations on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), the envoy said: “We hope that, if the negotiations are successful, all avenues for more investment and trade … will have more creativity and Innovation.”
He believes that the resulting regulatory framework for mutual investment and trade will pave the way for more bilateral delas in areas such as energy, agriculture and food security, water production and protection.
As the UAE prepares for a future that may be free of fossil fuels due to concerns about climate change; the diplomat said Chile hopes to strengthen cooperation in this area by adopting renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and hydrogen.
Working together to tackle climate change
“Chile has experienced a drought in the central region of our country for about 12 years. Fortunately, we got rain this year, especially in the central region where the capital, Santiago is located. Otherwise, without rain, we would have been in an emergency through 2023. state,” he explained.
As a result, Broughton stressed that Chile has made decarbonizing its economy a priority and that progress has been made in decarbonizing energy.
The envoy noted that the UAE has successfully created beautiful cities with green grass and trees by using desalination and water recycling. “We have another very important area of cooperation. Chile will have to invest a lot in this technology. We can cooperate and hopefully get some investment from the UAE.”
Food Safety and World Logistics Passport
Food security is another area of cooperation, as it is also a priority for the UAE, Broughton said. “Chile is a great producer of agricultural products.”
He suggested that the World Logistics Passport is a major initiative by Dubai to facilitate trade between developing markets and could play an important role in enhancing global food security by facilitating the logistics of agricultural products. “We are most willing to explore these areas.”
The diplomat said the UAE’s advancements in the space sector and new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, etc. also provide new areas of cooperation.
Diversity visible in UAE
Although he had never visited the UAE before serving as ambassador, the first few weeks gave him ample opportunity to experience an impressively diverse society. “Diversity and inclusion, and how all these different faiths and peoples coexist peacefully, has impressed me. You can see…you can experience it in the streets, in shopping malls and in public institutions.
