The news cycle calmed down in the second half of August, reducing ratings for evening news broadcasts. That said, we see a consistent theme here: ABC World News Tonight with David Muir Still number one.
According to Nielsen live data, World News Tonight had an average total viewership of 7.23 million for the week ended Aug. 22, with 1.225 million adults aged 25-54. The 7.23 million figure means World News Tonight was not only the most-watched evening news broadcast, but it was also the most-watched program (excluding sports) on U.S. television for the 20th week in a row. In addition, ABC’s evening newscast beat NBC and CBS by 195 in the past 196 weeks in average viewership, and 124 in the past 126 weeks among adults aged 25-54.
That said, compared to the previous week (August 15), World News Tonight saw a -1% decrease in total viewership and a -2% decrease in presentations for adults aged 25-54. Worse year-over-year with -11% decline in total viewership, and -22% decline in playback for adults aged 25-54 Beginning with the comparable week in 2021 (August 23), At the time TV news was covering Afghanistan’s exit from the crisis.
Last week, the average total viewership for NBC Nightly News on the linear network was 6.07 million. This was down less than -1% from the previous week. The 6.07 million figure is the third-highest number on U.S. television, excluding specials, sports and syndication. Nightly News averaged 986,000 adults aged 25-54 in the past week, a 1 percent increase from the previous week. On the downside, however, Nightly News saw a -12% year-over-year decline in total viewership and a -21% year-over-year decline for adults aged 25-54.
In terms of digital viewing, Nightly News’ weekday episodes had 627,000 viewers and 785,000 viewers on YouTube. This is based on data from Adobe Analytics and Partner Portal and YouTube Analytics Portal.
NBC Nightly News beat CBS for the 191st straight month in the pivotal A25-54 demo.
Speaking of CBS, the evening news with Nora O’Donnell The fourth week of August averaged 4.45 million viewers and 6,000 adults aged 25-54. In terms of total viewers, this was a solid +5% compared to +7% for adults aged 25-54 the previous week. The Evening News saw only a -5% decrease in total viewership, but -21% for adults aged 25-54 compared to the same period in 2021.
CBS Evening News continues to rename its Summer Friday broadcast. On Friday, August 26, CBS Evening News was renamed “CBS Evening News.” NBC Nightly News is also renaming its Friday, Aug. 26 TV show “NBC Nitely News.” Renamed TV shows are not included in the weekly and seasonal averages. CBS and NBC’s weekly evening news ratings averages are based on just four days (Monday through Thursday), while ABC’s evening ratings averages are based on all five days, including traditionally lower summer Fridays.
