At least eight migrants have been found dead in Rio Grande, Texas, after dozens attempted a dangerous crossing near Eagle Pass.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Mexican officials made the discovery while responding to a large group of people crossing the river, when heavy rains caused the water to flow especially fast.
U.S. officials recovered six bodies, while the Mexican team found two others.
U.S. crews rescued 37 other people from the river and detained another 16, while Mexican officials detained 39 migrants, CBP said.
Officials on both sides of the border are continuing to search for more potential victims.
There is no confirmation of which country or countries the migrants came from.
The Border Patrol Del Rio District, which includes Eagle Pass, is fast becoming the busiest lane for illegal border crossings. Agents at the department stopped nearly 50,000 immigrants in July, with Rio Grande Valley coming in second with about 35,000.
The area attracts immigrants from dozens of countries, many of them families with young children. In July, about 6 out of 10 sites in the Del Rio region were immigrants from Venezuela, Cuba or Nicaragua.
The area, which stretches 245 miles along the Rio Grande River, is especially dangerous because the river can appear to be fast and change rapidly. Crossing the river can be a challenge even for strong swimmers.
US officials announced last month that they had found the bodies of more than 200 migrants in the area between October and July.
