He has some amazing miniature works on display at the Japan Pavilion.

Japanese mitate artist, writer, and photographer Tanaka Tatsuya showcases beauty in the little things. By combining common objects with a vast library of figurines, Tanaka inspires and shocks his audience by depicting relevant scenes from a unique perspective every day. From small Colosseum scenes in tart shells to transport beach images using ham sandwiches and egg “suns”, his captivating creations often attract large audiences from around the world.
Tanaka, known as the first “miniature” photographer, has attracted attention with his “miniature calendar”, a series of one photo a day for over a decade. What started as a hobby of collecting and making plastic miniature figures, he soon posted daily photos of his miniature creations on Instagram. Soon his work became so popular that he became a “miniature” photographer. Since 2011, the Japanese art director and designer has been creating playful and intricate miniature dioramas as part of his “Miniature Calendar” project.
Born in Kumamoto Prefecture in 1981, graduated with a major in fine arts and became the art director of a design company. He started creating “miniature calendars” in 2011, and has since exhibited the miniature life exhibition: Tatsuya Tanaka’s Similar World, which attracted more than 1,600,000 visitors in August 2021.
His latest exhibition at the Japan Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai includes 128 individual and miniature artworks assembled individually for the event. Divided into 4 themes – Space, City, Sea and Land, each presentation interprets technological advancements and innovations in a unique and exciting style.
How do you develop unique themes?
Over the past 10 years, I have designed and created several themed installations. Four areas of land, city, sea and space were chosen to accomplish the objectives of the pavilion, so several of my previous collections are related to these themes. Reviewing the presented topics, I was able to curate the best description and present to the final selection. Together we managed to assign matching pieces to these areas, allocating more time to develop more artwork.
How do you make sure you have time every day to create art? Where do you find inspiration?
My studio is a creative haven where I pour my energy into developing and building projects. While we take everyday chores like shopping, washing up, studying, etc. for granted, it is here that I find the inspiration to create my miniature world.
What do you mean by original and unique?
While originality and uniqueness are different, in a way they complement each other. After years of hard work developing the original idea for a miniature calendar, this concept is also arguably unique. When I first started, I wasn’t specifically looking for anything extraordinary or unique. I was automatically driven to find ways to showcase my photography. However, this also became the original idea of the installation.
Where did you find your diorama doll?
I bought 70% of my dolls from the German manufacturer Preiser. The remaining 30% is made or modified by myself, which gives me the flexibility to match the topic I’m working on.
Are more people exploring this art form?
This art form is becoming more and more popular; many artists are experimenting and developing their own niches. As a result, we are seeing a huge increase in interest in this area.
