‘The people affected by the blast are still the same. They just paint and fix their house’

A 50-minute documentary, Beirut After the Explosion, premiered in Dubai, United Arab Emirates on September 1, immersing viewers in a virtual reality experience of the Beirut port explosion that occurred two years ago.

The purpose of this film is not politics. Instead, our goal is to tell the story of humanitarian crises — beyond the physical and emotional.

On August 4, 2020, nearly three thousand tons of explosive ammonium nitrate were port of beirut. The stores have remained in the port since 2013 and are not adequately protected. As a result, more than 200 people were killed and thousands more injured. The blast also destroyed the homes of more than 250,000 people.

“Beirut After the Bomb” tells the story of Lebanese victims demanding justice from the government, one accused of corruption and negligence for the tragedy.

Director Fahed Abu Salah aims to address the psychological trauma the city has suffered over the past two years.

“We wanted to document this event so we don’t forget it,” Salah said. “We also wanted to know what happened two years after the explosion and wondered if the event would be forgotten.”

The screening is also quite unique: it takes place entirely in Metaverse.

The audience wears virtual reality headsets and is completely immersed in the story.

“The people affected by the blast are still the same. They just painted and repaired their houses,” Salah continued. “It’s true that the building looks better than it used to be, but people can’t forget about it.”

After the screening, the “NFT-backed crowdfunding platform” production company released a series of NFTs in Lebanon’s honor, with all profits donated to those affected by the tragedy.
