U.S. says hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians forced to travel to Russia in ‘series of terror’

U.S. intelligence has reportedly obtained evidence that about one million Ukrainian citizens have been interrogated, detained and forcibly deported to Russia.

At a U.N. Security Council meeting convened by the United States and Albania, an alleged “filtering operation” is underway, with Ukrainians voluntarily fleeing the war in their homeland – and those forcibly transferred to Russia – through a series of “filtering points”.

Treatment there is said to have ranged from interrogation, data collection and strip searches, to being pulled aside, tortured, and sent to a Russian detention center, never to be seen again.

The United States claimed all of this was a “series of terrorist incidents” overseen by Russian presidential officials.

Moscow, however, immediately dismissed the allegations as “fantasy” and described them as the latest invention in a Western disinformation campaign.

US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield said estimates from various sources, including the Russian government, suggested that Russian authorities had interrogated, detained and forcibly deported between 900,000 and 1.6 million Ukrainians.

She said other estimates suggest thousands of children were filtered, “some separated from their families, taken from orphanages and then adopted in Russia.”

According to US information, in July alone, “more than 1,800 children were transferred to Russia from Russian-controlled areas of Ukraine,” she said.
