UAE: Conference on women, peace and security sees participation of senior officials – News

The International Conference on Women, Peace and Security (ICWPS) was organized by Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak, President of the General Women’s Union (GWU), President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme President of the Family Development Foundation (FDF). bint Mubarak) presided over the opening) and “Mother of Nations”.

Organised by the General Union of Women, UN Women and the Ministry of Defence ICWPS, the event will take place in Abu Dhabi from 8 to 10 September.

The opening ceremony was attended by several prominent officials, including Minister of State for Defence Affairs Mohammad bin Ahmed Albwadi, Minister of State for International Cooperation Rem Bint Ibrahim Al-Hashimi, Dr. Sima Sami Bahous, Ambassador Lana Nusseibeh, UAE Representative to the United Nations (UN) Dr. Haifa Abu Ghazaleh, League of Arab States (LAS) Assistant Secretary-General and Head of Social Affairs Dr. Nayef Falah Al Hajraf, Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council ( Abdullah Al Hamli, Chairman of GCC) and CEO of Abu Dhabi Ports Group Economic Cities and Free Zones.

Al Bowardi said: “The convening of this meeting is the result of existing collaboration between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the UAE Ministry of Defence, the General Union of Women, UN Women and the League of Arab States, and underscores the efforts of the UAE to advance the women, peace and security agenda. And our support as a key partner to implement that agenda and empower women in military and security, as well as their other roles.”

Nura Suwadi, Secretary General of the General Women’s Union, said: “In line with the vision of the General Women’s Union, we seek to actively empower women in all sectors and areas, including peace and security, and strengthen dialogue and drive to help us serve the global community. A partnership for security, stability and development.”

Dr Bahous said: “UN Women and its partners around the world are working hard to advance the women, peace and security agenda, but we need the international community, including all regional organisations, to stand with us so that we can fully deliver on our commitment to The promises made by women and girls in conflict zones and by survivors of violence. We must listen carefully to women’s voices; this is the only way we can restore balance and have a chance for peace, and it cannot be achieved without this synergy, so let us shared values. The peace and security we desire can only be achieved when women play a central role.”

Falah Mohammed Al Ahbabi, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Ports Group, expressed his deep gratitude to Sheikha Fatima for his sponsorship of this important event, which is symbolic of the UAE’s position and its leadership in the women, peace and security agenda.

Three panel discussions were held on the first day of the conference. The first session, titled “Women for Peace,” focused on the current global landscape of the WPS agenda, assessing obstacles and the importance of turning resolutions into solutions. The conference showcased women’s leadership in conflict and post-conflict areas and showcased the most salient successes and challenges to the successful implementation of the women, peace and security agenda.

The theme of the second session, “Women Transforming Security: Changing the Peacekeeping Landscape”, reviewed the status, major obstacles and challenges of women in UN peacekeeping, in addition to praising women’s contributions to the security sector, highlighting the success of some of the trainees stories and experiences.

The final session discussed how inclusive peace processes and the participation of women in political processes and conflict resolution have been shown to lead to more sustainable and lasting peace.

The programme of conferences for the second day will consist of four sessions, which will be opened by Dr. Muza Alshehi, Director of UN Women’s GCC Liaison Office, and the third day will feature a high-level ministerial on advancing the role of women in conflict. Conference – Affected and Post-Conflict Societies, led by the League of Arab States, with participation of international policymakers, senior officials, diplomats and advocates related to women, peace and security.
