UAE police arrest Afghan fans with violence and fines after Pakistan match

Sharjah: United Arab Emirates (UAE) police authorities have arrested 97 Afghan nationals for damaging Sharjah stadium infrastructure and fighting around the stadium.

In addition, 117 people from other parts of the UAE were arrested for their involvement in violence against Pakistani cricket fans.

A total of 391 people were reportedly arrested, while police were fined Dh3,000 (approximately Rs 190,000) for damaging stadium property and warned that those involved would be deported if such incidents recur.

Afghan cricket fans wrecked the stadium, threw chairs at Pakistani fans and knocked them out in sporadic brawls outside the stadium after their final loss to Pakistan in the Asian Cup Super 4 match on Wednesday.

It took a turn for the worse when Afghan bowler Fareed Ahmad took the wicket of Pakistan’s Asif Ali, with both players scolding each other and inciting the Afghans Attacking Pakistani fans with chairs.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ramiz Raja also expressed concern over the incident and decided to lodge a protest with the International Cricket Council (ICC) at an upcoming meeting.

“This game doesn’t want that kind of environment. The visuals are really bad. It’s not the first time something like this has happened. Emotions should be controlled, we have our fans, we protested to the ICC,” he said.
