A royal official has publicly announced King Charles III as Britain’s new monarch during a ceremony at St James’s Palace.
Garter Arms King David White read the manifesto from the balcony of the London royal residence, flanked by trumpeters in gold-trimmed robes.
The announcement was followed by gun salutes in Hyde Park, the Tower of London and military sites across the UK.
The red-robed soldiers in the palace raised their weapons, took off their bearskin hats, and gave a royal salute.

LONDON — King Charles III has announced that the day of his mother’s funeral will be a public holiday.
Charles approved the decision during his official inauguration on Saturday.
No date has been announced for Queen Elizabeth II’s state funeral, but it is expected to be around September 19.
It will be the second additional public holiday for Britons this year – a holiday was announced in early June to mark Elizabeth’s 70th anniversary on the throne.

They met without Charles, officially confirming his title, King Charles III. The king will then join them in a series of oaths and declarations.
This is the first time the ceremony has been held since Queen Elizabeth II came to the throne in 1952.

Biden and First Lady Jill Biden said the Queen’s “legacy will be seen throughout the pages of British history and the stories of our world.”
Every living former U.S. president — Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump — joined Biden in mourning her death and sending a message to her family express condolences.
ATHENS, Greece — Former Greek King Constantine called Queen Elizabeth II “a beacon of dignity and humility throughout the world.”
Constantine lived in London for many years after the abolition of the Greek monarchy and had close ties to the British royal family.
“We’ve been through so much together and I’ll never forget the love and support she showed me and my family,” he said in a statement Friday. “To King Charles III, I wish from the bottom of my heart the same success in serving his country.”

According to New Zealand’s constitutional arrangements, the Queen is also New Zealand’s monarch and head of state.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said New Zealand had entered an official period of mourning and would hold a national memorial service after the official funeral in the UK.
ABUJA, Nigeria — The death of British monarch Elizabeth II was front-page news in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, largest economy and former British colony.
A spokesman for Nigerian President Mohammodu Buhari said he expressed his condolences and sadness to hear of the Queen’s passing.
On a newsstand in the capital, Abuja, a man named Moussa Adam also expressed this view. The civil servant urged the British people to “be patient and suffer”, noting that “God will bless you all now”.
