Iranian guards seize foreign vessel in Gulf for smuggling diesel World News

Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards have seized a foreign vessel in the Gulf on suspicion of smuggling 757,000 liters of diesel from the country, state news agency IRNA reported on Saturday.

The seven foreign crew members of the unnamed vessel have been handed over to legal authorities, IRNA reported, without detailing the nationalities of the vessel or its crew.

Iran, which has some of the cheapest fuel prices in the world thanks to heavy subsidies and a devaluing national currency, has been fighting rampant fuel smuggling to neighboring countries by land and to Gulf Arab states by sea.

Guards have detained several ships smuggling fuel in the Gulf over the past few months.
