Mourners flocked to the gates of Buckingham Palace in London on Thursday to mourn the death of Queen Elizabeth II after 70 years on the throne.
Passersby stopped to pay their respects, and some shed tears as they laid flowers in honour of the only monarch most Britons know. A photo taken by an Associated Press photographer shows a red balloon with a black-and-white photo of the young queen hanging from hundreds of flowers.
From billboards to subway tunnels to the front pages of nearly every newspaper, the Queen’s image is not to be missed.
Prince William and Kate, Princess of Wales, Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex stopped outside Windsor Castle on Saturday to read messages left by mourners, while the streets were lined with people trying to get a glimpse.
Earlier in the day, King Charles III was officially proclaimed as British monarch, and officials released details of the carefully choreographed ceremony that will mark his mother’s state funeral on September 19.
On Sunday, the hearse began its journey from Balmoral, Scotland, to Edinburgh with her flag casket, where it will stop for 24 hours for the public to pay their respects. In the evening, members of the royal family will be vigil by the coffin.
The Queen’s coffin will be flown to London by the RAF on Tuesday before being transported to Buckingham Palace.
