Kenan Thompson kicked off the Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday (09/12/22) with a dance medley of popular TV themes.
Audiences at the “Saturday Night Live” star at home and inside the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles watched various parodies of the segment, beginning with him dancing to the “Friends” theme on a red sofa.
Speaking of the sitcom’s lack of diversity, he quipped: “Have you all seen The Bachelorette? I really think you’ll like it.”
In addition to the themes from “Stranger Things” and “The Brady Swarm,” Kennan urged people to “put a little Ice-T in the lemonade” as he danced after donning a “Law & Order”-themed EDM remix. In the “House of the Dragon” parody, the blonde wig becomes “Kenan of House Targaryen”.
He yells at the end of the clip: “‘Game of Thrones, b******.”
In his opening monologue, the 44-year-old star isn’t afraid to make fun of himself, explaining that while he’s best known for “SNL,” some viewers may know him from his eponymous sitcom.
Then he joked: “You don’t have enough numbers to stop us from being cancelled.”
Speaking of some of the nominees, he said: “Stranger Things is ugly because it’s scary, Squid Game is ugly because it’s violent, and Yellow Jacket is ugly because it’s on Showtime. ..
“The Heirs is the only show that has three brothers and no brothers.”
Kennan also joked about his fate after Netflix shares fell.
Saying “The Squid Game” is about people trying to make money, he said: “Join the cast for next season: Netflix.”
And praised Abbott Elementary for donating their Emmy marketing budget to public school teachers, adding: “It’s to help those in need – that’s why all of my paycheck for tonight’s show goes directly to Netflix. That’s two, Netflix! They’ll never give me a comedy special, but that’s okay.”
Earlier this year, the Oscars were slapped by Will Smith for slapping Chris Rock over a joke from his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith eclipsed, and the Emmy hosts weren’t afraid to joke about it.
Seeing Oscars co-host Regina Hall in the audience, he quipped: “Surprise she’s at another awards show – girl, you’re brave.”
Later in the show, Bowen Yang told viewers he was the backup host in case something went wrong, and when Kennan asked what would happen, his “SNL” co-host quipped, “Did you see the Oscars?”
