brussels [Belgium]16 September (ANI): The European Parliament has slammed the Hungarian government for “deliberate and systematic efforts” to undermine democratic values, saying the country can no longer be a “full democracy” but an “electoral dictatorship”, as according to news from the EU legislature draft.
It said the situation had deteriorated to the point where Hungary had become an “electoral autocracy”.
“Members of the European Parliament (MEP) remain concerned with numerous issues related to democracy and fundamental rights in Hungary. Key areas of concern include the functioning of the constitution and electoral system, judicial independence, corruption and conflicts of interest, and freedom of expression, including media pluralism.”
“Academic freedom, freedom of religion and association, the rights to equal treatment, including the rights of LGBTIQ people, the rights of minorities, and the rights of immigrants, asylum seekers and refugees are also problem areas,” it added.

The report was approved by an overwhelming majority of members of the European Parliament, declaring the country a “mixed regime electoral autocracy”. The text passed on Thursday with 433 votes in favor, 123 against, and 28 abstentions.
According to the MEPs, the lack of decisive action on the part of the EU has led to the emergence of a “hybrid electoral autocracy”, a constitutional system in which elections are held but which do not respect rules and democratic standards.
Parliament said EU institutions must act and must be held accountable. It also called on the European Commission not to approve Hungary’s recovery plan until Hungary fully complies with all European Semester recommendations and implements all relevant judgments of the Court of Justice of the European Union and the Court of Human Rights.
The EU Parliament has also urged that Hungary be excluded from funding cohesion programmes that misuse EU funds or violate the rule of law, and apply the Common Clause Regulation and Financial Regulations more strictly to prevent the misuse of EU funds for political reasons.
Judicial independence, corruption and fundamental freedoms are among the main concerns of the European Parliament. (ANI)
