Toronto: For years, the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has provided a platform for debut directors from India, and the film’s high-profile debut “Kacchey Limbu” is part of that trend.
The film, Mumbai-based Shubham Yogi’s first production, was chosen as the festival’s most high-profile segment, the Gala Presentations, including walking the red carpet and premiering at the event’s premier theatre, Roy Thompson Hall .
The yogi was stunned by the experience, which he described as “unreal.” He defines production as a studio-backed project with an independent spirit. After TIFF bows, it may head to other festivals before being shown to the public.
He said the feedback he’s received so far after the world premiere in Toronto has been “very encouraging.”
Yogi is one of a series of Indian directors launched at TIFF. In 2021, all three Indian films are directed by directors producing their first full-length feature films. Mumbai-based Payal Kapadia’s documentary A Night of Knowing nothing is one of three winners of Amplify Voice, which celebrate the diversity of cinema, while the festival also showcases Ritwik Pareek’s Dug Dug and Nithin Lukose’s Paka.
Kacchey Limbu’s background is Mumbai’s competitive cricket game, with sibling rivalry being its main arc, led by Radhika Madan, Rajat Barmecha and Ayush Mehra.
“Driven by high-energy music and a cast of endearing characters,” TIFF noted when introducing the film, “it’s a dynamic story of teamwork and self-discovery.”
In fact, at the world premiere, the film was presented by TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey, who also did a post-screening Q&A with the cast and crew.
Such a showcase is an honor for a film constantly challenged by the Covid-19 pandemic, as director Yogi, as well as cast and crew, have all fallen prey to the disease.
The 11-day 2022 festival ends on Sunday.
