NORTH FORT HOOD, Texas (KWTX) – In the North Fort Hood area, soldiers stationed there are quarantined on base away from their families while awaiting deployment.
“They can’t go out in our great state, they can’t go to the movies, they can’t go out to eat,” Diana Finch said.
That’s where Finch and the Gatesville-based nonprofit North Fort Hood Division stepped in, making soldiers feel more concerned.
“They’re training and doing these dangerous, intense and sometimes dangerous exercises, and they do need a break,” said Finch, the group’s coordinator.
The nonprofit is the Gatesville Alliance of Faith and Service Organizations. The North Fort Hood Department hosts events that either bring soldiers into the community or bring the community inside the base.
On Sunday night, the group entertained the base with a free concert by the Cody Hibbert Band. Soldiers also received free hamburgers and sausage rolls, which the soldiers may not even know about.
New York native Irshad Khan arrived in North Fort Hood on Sunday, just hours before the event.
“When you’re at base, the only connection you really have is talking to your family on the phone,” says Khan, 91 Bravo wheeled vehicle mechanic. “Yes, it might be a little hard at first, but we are soldiers and that’s what we should do.”
While they may not be able to establish that physical connection with their loved ones, soldiers like Khan say events like this help bring a feeling of home to the base.
“Civilians are giving me food and water. Soldiers are approaching me and asking me where are you from,” he said. “They make you feel good, and I like that.”
