Abu Dhabi: The Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi (CCAD) has been named the UAE’s top smart hospital by Newsweek and ranks among the top 100 hospitals in the world.

Tools such as our da Vinci robotic surgery system, integrated electronic medical records, and artificial intelligence-equipped imaging systems help us perform delicate, complex procedures and tests, and minimize risk to patients, ultimately achieving the best possible CCAD, said Dr. Jorge Guzman, CEO of CCAD.
A total of 300 hospitals from 28 different countries were ranked for rethinking patient care using digital technology, based on feedback from thousands of hospital administrators and medical professionals around the world. The hospitals were evaluated in five categories: electronic capabilities, telemedicine, digital imaging, artificial intelligence and robotics.
One of CCAD’s many technology changers is the da Vinci™ Surgical System, which consists of a 3D camera and four robotic arms with surgical tools attached. It helps surgeons perform more complex, delicate and complex procedures through very small incisions. The surgeon operates by controlling the arm from a computer console using hand and foot input, while viewing a live, magnified, high-definition image of the surgical field on the screen. This surgical approach ensures shorter recovery times, fewer complications, smaller scars, less blood loss and less pain for the patient.
CCAD also uses a cutting-edge artificial intelligence system called Transpara as part of breast cancer screening. It uses a sophisticated algorithm that provides radiologists with immediate, objective feedback on suspicious areas identified on mammograms. This improves the accuracy of cancer detection, speeds up treatment decisions, and ultimately helps more women survive breast cancer. Transpara has changed the lives of cancer patients because it can see details that most specialized radiologists can’t, and analyze imaging faster than a few years ago. Transpara is just one of many incredible innovations that CCAD will use to treat cancer at its new cancer center later this year.
The Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system used by CCAD provides quick access to patient records for more coordinated and efficient care, while securely sharing electronic information with the rest of the patient care team. EMR has many benefits:
Nursing staff have better medical and treatment histories and can access patient charts from anywhere in the hospital using unique patient identifiers. This gives physicians access to complete information, saves data collection time, reduces wait times, and ultimately helps them diagnose and treat patients more efficiently and safely.
CCAD also uses an advanced in-house automated pharmacy system that allows for simplified, faster workflows while reducing medication errors—one of the most common safety concerns in healthcare. Rather than sending handwritten prescriptions to pharmacies (which are still the norm at many hospitals), prescribers send prescriptions digitally. Everything is linked to the same barcode on the patient’s hospital wristband.
This is the second edition of the World’s Best Smart Hospitals list compiled by Newsweek and Statista Inc. The ranking process is based on three steps: an international online survey of hospital managers and healthcare professionals recommending the world’s leading smart hospitals; an international survey of chief digital transformation/information officers and senior managers evaluating digital technology in hospitals; A desk study was conducted at each nominated hospital.
