Nigerian students block roads in capital Lagos to protest lecturer strike

[ad_1]

Hundreds of students blocked the main airport road in Nigeria’s commercial capital, Lagos, on Monday to protest classroom disruptions caused by a lecturer’s strike that has lasted more than seven months.

Wage strikes for lecturers at public universities are common in Nigeria and often last for months. The most recent action began in February.

Students chanting and holding placards gathered on Lagos International Airport Road, causing traffic jams in a city already battling daily traffic jams and stranded motorists and air passengers.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) threatened to seize major airports over the weekend in a message that students are tired of the pay standoff between lecturers and President Muhammadu Buhari’s government.

Awoyinfa Opeoluwa, spokesperson for NANS South West, said: “We are here to carry out economic activities at Murtala Muhammed International Airport so that the government, as first class, can be aware that our students have now been away from campus for seven months.” Reuters.

Passengers were forced to walk at least five kilometers to and from the airport with their luggage in the rain. Dozens of armed police watched from a distance.

Demonstrations have often turned deadly in Nigeria. The last major protest, two years ago over police brutality, ended with some protesters being shot dead.
