Beijing [China]September 24 (ANI): A former Chinese vice minister of public security accused of taking bribes of more than 646 million yuan has been sentenced to death, just weeks before a major Communist Party reshuffle on October 16.

According to the Global Times, former Vice Minister Sun Lijun was deprived of his political rights and all his personal property was confiscated.

Sun was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve for accepting bribes. After completing the sentence, his sentence will be commuted to life imprisonment without commutation or parole, according to the Global Times, citing a court ruling.

He was also sentenced to eight years in prison and fined 1 million yuan for manipulating the stock market, in addition to five years in prison for illegal possession of firearms. Therefore, the court decided to impose the death penalty with a two-year reprieve.

From 2001 to April 2020, Sun used the influence accumulated in his past positions to seek benefits for others and illegally received 646 million yuan in property.

In the first half of 2018, Sun manipulated relevant individuals to engage in stock market transactions, helping some individuals avoid losses of 145 million yuan.

Sun was also found to be in illegal possession of two firearms, the Global Times reported.

A similar incident was reported Wednesday in which three former police chiefs were punished for taking bribes.

Gong Daoan, former deputy mayor of the Shanghai Municipal Government and former director of the Shanghai Public Security Bureau, was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Tangshan Intermediate People’s Court in Hebei Province for accepting bribes of approximately 73.4 million yuan ($10.4 million).

The court also deprived Gong of his political rights for life and confiscated all of his personal property and turned over his illicit gains to the state treasury, China Daily reported.

In another case, Deng Huilin, former deputy mayor of the Chongqing Municipal Government and former director of the Chongqing Municipal Public Security Bureau, was sentenced to 15 years in prison by the Baoding Intermediate People’s Court of Hebei Province for accepting 42.7 million yuan in bribes.

The court also fined him 4 million yuan, and Deng’s illegal gains will be turned over to the state treasury, China Daily reported.

Separately, Liu Xinyun, a former vice-governor and chief of public security in Shanxi province, was sentenced to 14 years in prison on Wednesday after he was handed a comprehensive punishment for corruption charges in a court in Hebei province.

The Intermediate People’s Court of Langfang City, Hebei Province sentenced Liu to 12 years in prison and a fine of 1 million yuan for accepting bribes, and sentenced Liu to four years for abuse of power. The sentences add up to 14 years, according to China Daily.

Gong Daoan, Deng Huilin and Liu Xinyun were convicted of accepting bribes for their alleged infidelity to President Xi Jinping. The trial comes three weeks before the ruling Communist Party’s National Congress on Oct. 16, where Xi is expected to extend his rule for the third time.

Since coming to power in 2012, Chinese President Xi Jinping has launched a series of campaigns that are nominally anti-corruption but aimed at eliminating political opponents and building his own political prestige. (ANI)
