Four MoUs signed with top railway companies will cover areas such as railway operations and maintenance, service facilities, passenger terminals and freight transport
Etihad Rail unveils new strategy and brand identity
Etihad Rail has signed partnership agreements with top international companies to bring state-of-the-art technology into its operations.
During InnoTrans 2022 in Germany from 20 to 23 September, the operator of the UAE’s national rail network signed four Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) with French state-owned railway company SNCF International; Alstom, a leader in the green and smart mobility sector A global leader; Progress Rail, a Caterpillar company, is one of the world’s largest integrated suppliers of rail and transportation products and services; Thales is a global leader in advanced technology.
Key areas covered by the agreement include railway operations and maintenance, service facilities, passenger terminals and freight transport.
Ahmed Al Musawa, Executive Director of Etihad Rail Passenger, said: “By partnering with some of the biggest names in the rail, freight and transport industries, we assure our customers that we are meeting the highest international standards to meet their requirements and support them to achieve business goals to drive sustainable, resilient and cost-effective supply chains.”

Under the terms of the MoU between Etihad Rail and SNCF International, the two parties will collaborate and explore opportunities in different areas of mutual interest. These areas include railway operations; train maintenance; workshops and training courses; design, development and operation of railway projects in the UAE; supply and maintenance of railway rolling stock; mobility and integration solutions between various modes of transport; station services and facilities etc.
Diego Diaz, President of SNCF International, said: “We believe that rail transport is the foundation of sustainable transport. SNCF International pays tribute to Etihad Rail’s commitment with its ambitious major rail transport projects. We look forward to this collaboration.”
The MoU between Etihad Rail and Alstom focuses on the integration of advanced technologies and services in the rail industry.
As part of the MoU, the two parties will collaborate in the following areas: railway innovation, from incubation to commercialization, including the sustainability of innovations in the field of train technology; mobility and integration solutions between various modes of transport; performance of railways , and the lifetime performance of the system. Etihad Rail and Alstom will also collaborate on first and last mile strategies; Mobility digitization (MaaS system implementation, logical systems/IT architecture, cybersecurity); Test commissioning, O&M; Rolling stock configuration and facilities; learning ecosystem development; local industrialization, among other areas of interest.
“We are delighted to be partnering with Etihad Rail as they build a strong transport ecosystem for the UAE and the region. Together we will focus on digitalising the rail sector to optimise operations, maintenance and enhance the customer experience for passenger services In addition, we will help with the transition to zero-emission solutions, with a focus on green traction, including innovative and sustainable mobility solutions,” said Mama Sougoufara, Managing Director of Alstom MENAT Region (Middle East, North Africa and Turkey).
The MoU with Thales will also focus on the digitalisation of Etihad Rail services.
Under the terms of the MoU, the two parties will collaborate in a number of areas, including: Next-Generation Rail Control; European Train Control System (ETSC) Level 3; Driver Advisory Systems; Intelligent Transportation Operations; Asset Management; Real-Time Passenger Flow; Data-Driven Operations control centers; video analytics; connectivity and passenger entertainment systems; reservation and ticketing systems, and mobility and integration solutions between various modes of transportation.

In addition, the MoU with Progress Rail aims to discuss areas of cooperation to support sustainable development of the rail industry by discussing potential opportunities to develop and deploy autonomous, zero-emission port-to-port concepts, which could serve as a foundation for future global rail operations .
“Progress Rail is committed to delivering sustainable solutions to customers like Etihad Rail,” commented Progress Rail President and CEO Marty Haycraft. “The underlying technology suite we are developing will provide railroads around the world with a journey towards decarbonisation.”
Etihad Rail is one of the main exhibitors at “InnoTrans 2022” and one of the other exhibitors from the rail and transport industry. The company’s stand, covering 1,058 square meters, showcased the latest developments in the development of the UAE’s national railway network. InnoTrans is the leading international trade fair for transport technology, held every two years in Berlin.
