Community members, friends and colleagues held a vigil in memory of Abu Dhabi resident Sarah Inam, who was murdered in Pakistan last week.

Emotions ran high as Inam’s friends and colleagues shared their moments and stories about Inam, crying and laughing, and said they felt closer to her.

Inam’s former colleagues Kamilah Khatib and Abeer Amiri held a face-to-face virtual candlelight vigil in memory of their dear friend on Wednesday, September 28, coinciding with her funeral in Pakistan.

More than 60 friends and colleagues of the deceased attended the vigil. Virtual participation from loved ones from Canada, Pakistan and the UK.

Sarah Inam is an economist who has lived in the UAE for almost 14 years and is buried in Islamabad.

Sarah’s father Inan Rahim was also in tears at the funeral, demanding justice for his daughter.

Friends and colleagues are also demanding justice for the 38-year-old Pakistani-Canadian national who was allegedly murdered by her husband Shanawaz. The couple were married for just three months.

Sarah is passionate about history, economics, and religion, and is a voracious reader and thinker. Friends and colleagues recalled that Sarah Inam was a kind and gentle person who just wanted to find love and start a family.

“It is so heartwarming to bring all her friends from around the world and all stages of her life together at such a devastating time to remember the kind, funny and sweet woman she was once. It gives us the opportunity Retelling our favorite memories, but also the little things she does every day. The way she greeted everyone with ‘I’m cute,’ or the way she covered her mouth with a scarf when she was embarrassed,” said Deloitte with Stephen Nash, who worked with Inam, said.

Nash added: “As we mourn this grievous loss, we must continue to speak out for Sarah and fight for justice.”

Abeer Amiri said the vigil made everyone feel connected to Sarah Inam as they were unable to attend her funeral to pay their respects.

“When Sarah’s loved ones from all over the world shared her story, her beautiful character and her kind heart, I felt at that moment she was with us and could feel all the love we have for her forever. We are all affected by This news hurts,” she said.

It’s hard for Kamilah Khatib to share a story about Sarah.

“We cried, but we also laughed, recalling that she was a funny, smart, curious and kind friend. No matter who told her/his story, Sarah is remembered as the beautiful soul we all know. Through the vigil, we feel a little lighter and closer to her. Rest in peace, Angel,” Khatib said.
