The mobile Big Zero installations, shaped like Big Zeros, will be placed in prime locations with high foot traffic, including shopping malls, parks and public events, EAD said. For example, the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre hosted the first three Big Zero installations during the 19th Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition, with more than 100,000 visitors expected by the end of today, October 2. This will allow EAD to promote its campaign to eliminate single-use plastic.
“Mission Zero is a multi-faceted outreach and we are working hard to get all residents of Abu Dhabi to join us in achieving our goal of zero single-use plastic consumption. To support this goal, we have launched the Big Zero installation , the public can find these units in hotspots around Abu Dhabi where they can store single-use plastic bottles for recycling. We have signed an agreement with a plastic collection and recycling service provider who will be responsible for recycling the bottles ,” said Ahmed Baharoon, Executive Director of Environmental Information, Science Outreach Management at EAD.
“At EAD, we like to think big – that’s the name of the installation and we are sure we will be able to collect a large number of bottles and avoid the public disposing of them in a way that harms our environment. We encourage Abu Dhabi residents to start collecting their single-use plastic bottles and head to the nearest Big Zero facility,” he added.
The Big Zero initiative runs alongside other elements of the Abu Dhabi Zero Mission. For example, the Pile It Up campaign challenges students to compete to collect the most single-use plastic bottles for recycling. EAD is also working with schoolchildren to raise awareness about the hazards of single-use plastic and organize grocery store and baqala tours where students encourage community members and baqala staff to use greener alternatives.
Mission Zero supports Abu Dhabi’s single-use plastic policy, launched by EAD in 2020. The first phase of implementation saw a ban on single-use plastic bags from June 1, with major retailers such as Abu Dhabi Cooperative Spar, Carrefour, Lulu Hypermarket, Choithrams, Spinneys and Waitrose now only offering multipurpose bags to shoppers.
