Ford F-150 Lightning Powers Floridians’ Cooking, Lighting, Refrigerator and Entertainment During Hurricane Ian

[ad_1]

The Ford F-150 Lightning just went on sale, but I’ve heard a few stories about Lightning meeting people’s needs during a power outage. The first thing I heard was in Michigan that we had a full podcast about the F-150 Lightning owner’s experience and his comments on owning a Mustang Mach-E, driving a Ford BlueCruise, and more.By the way, he and I attended a recorded webinar period Hurricane Ian. I was upstairs in our townhouse when the strong hurricane started hitting us and I expected the power to go out at any moment. The owner of the F-150 Lightning, Aaron Smith, is also a clean tech Reader and chairman of the Energy and Environmental Building Alliance (EEBA) joked that I could use lightning during Hurricane Ian – trust me, I thought so too! As it turns out, we didn’t lose power until about 90% of our county and 100% of our neighboring counties’ utility districts were without power, and I kept it up during my one-and-a-half hour webinar! (We ended up only without power for about 16 hours starting in the early evening.) As we’ll see below, a Ford F-150 Lightning really helped a Florida man and his family weather the storm. Before we get into this story, though, if you’d like to watch the aforementioned webinar, click here:

The owner of the F-150 Lightning that uses Lightning during a power outage is Westeria Ren Ferguson. He uses his electric Ford pickup to power his and his family’s refrigerator, lights, fans, TV, electric stove burner, record player and speakers — and probably more.

As shown in the picture on the bottom right, the battery is still at 95% charge and the AC inside the truck is set to 69°F.

These photos are almost Ford ads. At first, I wondered if he used a picture of the Ford market. However, it turns out he is a photographer and associate creative director elegant seagullwith clients ranging from ESPN to Netflix to Airbnb.

Westley also takes us back in time in time, or at least uses technology some of us remember from the 2000s, 1990s, or even earlier, in order to have some entertainment during a storm without WiFi.

Westley even had time to call out some counterproductive and misguided anti-EV fears during the hurricane.

A Ford executive was also happy to get involved, offering a pun in response to Westley’s tweet.

Hehe – smart.

One person asked Westley how long he thought he could run his house aboard the Bliksem, a question many must have wondered. Naturally, not knowing how long they will be out of power (could be hours, it could be days or weeks), the most logical thing to do is to use only lightning to power the essentials. Additionally, Westerly does not have the vehicle-to-home (V2H) setup that Ford has partnered with Sunrun to offer. But, as you can see below, they use about 10% of the truck’s power in a day, so he thinks if the grid power goes out for that long, they can use the truck like that for 8-9 days.

In the end, he only needed to use the truck to power their electric stove, refrigerator, fans, lights and entertainment for two days. In those days, though, the truck sure felt invaluable!

Check out Westley’s Twitter timeline, just days before Hurricane Ian hit, and he was otherwise having fun with the young F-150 Chargers. He gets a lot of double whammy at the airport when he loads the giant Mega Frunk with his luggage…

…He went back to the future against Deloraine on his way to Universal Orlando.

What a great week! With his luck and photography skills, we’ll have to get in touch with Westley on the road to see what other types of adventures he’s had with his lightning bolts!
