AJ McLean supports his nine-year-old daughter’s decision to change her name.
The Backstreet Boys star’s little girl Ava – whom he shares with wife Rochelle Karidis and second daughter Lyric, 5 – has decided she now wants to be called Elliott, with AJ insisting it’s her right to change her name, and The family fully supports her.
He says People’s Network: “It’s her body, her name, her everything. She’s still Ava. She’ll always be my Ava.”
AJ went on to explain that Elliott’s name change had nothing to do with gender identity – she still identified herself as a woman, but wanted to call her by a different name.
He continued: “When my daughter asked to change her name to Elliott, initially, I didn’t know if it was a transgender thing, it wasn’t, but it was a personal choice. Whatever the reason, That’s hers, I’ll stand by it a million percent, my wife will [too]. “
The pop star added that her reasoning seemed to be that there were too many girls named Ava in her social circle.
AJ said Elliott told him, “Dad, I just don’t think my name is that unique and it’s not that original, there’s a lot of Avas in dance, and there’s a lot of Avas in school.”
He also suggested she came up with her new name after watching the classic children’s movie “Pete’s Dragon,” which featured a dragon named Elliott.
AJ and Rochelle got together in 2009, got married in 2011, and then welcomed their first child, Elliott, in 2012, with her sister Lyric following her in 2017.
