A video has gone viral in the UAE after a group of Al Wasl football fans wrapped their club’s scarves around the Al Nasr club flag and held it up to a pole. game night between the sides.
Video shows a group of Al Wasl fans lowering Al Nasr’s blue flag before tying Al Wasl’s yellow scarf and raising it to the flagpole at the Al Maktoum Stadium in Bur Dubai.
The Emiratis who saw the video responded by saying it was offensive and a far cry from the expectations of fans in the country.
Both teams issued statements condemning the “irresponsible behaviour” that followed the Dubai derby, which Al Wasl won 2-1 on Saturday.
“We congratulate Al Wasl Club on their victory on 1st October 2022, but we reject the inappropriate behaviour of a group of irresponsible fans. Al Nasr Club has won Al Wasl Club in several games at Zaabell Stadium in previous seasons , however, none of the Al Nasr fans made any offensive behaviour,” the Al Nasr club said.
“Such behaviour is simply not in line with UAE values and principles. We reject all types of prejudice. This group of fans is only concerned with inciting violence and hatred.”
The Al Nasr Club added that steps were being taken to prevent similar behaviour in the future.
“The legal process is to set an example for anyone trying to break the law and spread fanaticism and violence in sport,” the club added.
A representative of Al Wasl Football Club stated that it does not support this behaviour and that this particular group does not represent either UAE fans nor Al Wasl fans.
“There has been a strong and historic bond between the two clubs for decades. After the fourth round of the Adnoc Pro League there was some irresponsible behaviour by a group of fans,” said Al Wasl Football Club.
“We strongly condemn these personal actions that do not represent the UAE fans, especially Alwas fans.”
The club appeals to fans to show good sportsmanship and tolerance during the game.
