Red Bull Chief Consultant Helmut Marko after the Singapore Grand Prix Mercedes Boss Toto Wolff still hasn’t gotten over the events of last season in Abu Dhabi.
Mercedes lost the Drivers’ Championship to Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen on the final lap of last year’s controversial Abu Dhabi race. Wolff took aim at the team following reports of Red Bull breaching the cost cap last season.
Marko is not taking it lightly, telling motorsport-total.com that the Mercedes boss has yet to overcome a title loss in Abu Dhabi.
“It’s done huge damage to the reputation! Abu Dhabi is long gone. It’s kind of weird that he hasn’t gotten over it.”
One thing Marko found worrying was the “massive overreach” that Wolfe cites, which goes beyond “political slurs.” He says:
“How Toto Wolff came up with these numbers is simply amazing. He talked about massive overruns. There must be a leak somewhere in the FIA. Now that’s beyond the usual political slurs. These are specific and serious allegations. In our view, we are below it (the ceiling). If you interpret it against us, we are slightly ahead.”
Red Bull Boss Christian Horner is also unhappy with the “baseless allegations” against his team. The comments were defamatory, he said at the Singapore Grand Prix Makers press conference:
“What I’m saying absolutely stands. Let’s consider all our options. It’s totally unacceptable to make totally unfounded allegations and based on what knowledge? What is the source of this information? It’s between team and team Confidential submission to the FIA. I do not know whether any of our competitors are complying with the regulations.”
Horner also questioned Mercedes’ sources of information, saying:
“Where did this information come from? Let’s go through the process. We’re not told we’re breaking the rules. So let’s end the process and find out where we are.”
The FIA will make a ruling on the cost cap on October 10.
What does Mercedes boss think about Red Bull’s reported cost cap breaches?
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff was one of the first team chiefs to talk about an alleged breach of the cost cap.
In Wolff’s arguably sensational statement, Mercedes Breaching the cost cap is an open paddock secret, bosses say. He says:
“It’s funny that Christian said that because they’ve been investigated for weeks and months, so maybe he didn’t speak to his CFO (CFO). In fact, all of us were seriously investigated. ”
He continued:
“As far as we know, one team was in a minor breach, which was more procedural, and the other was fundamentally over on a massive scale, and it’s still under investigation. So it’s an open secret in the paddock.”
With the FIA delaying the announcement of the cost cap after the Japanese Grand Prix on October 9, it will be interesting to see how sentiment in the paddock plays out this weekend.
