Kingston (CMC):
Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves said his opposition to the British monarchy as the sovereign of St Vincent and the Grenadines did not mean he should disrespect King Charles III.
He made that point in response to opposition MP St Clair Leacock, who said Goncalves was showing “naked” in his meeting with the king in Scotland on Saturday.
“I saw a picture with Ralph and – let me be careful – the King of England, I don’t know who is who,” Licock said on NICE Radio’s party show “New Age” on Monday.
“Ralph’s weekend meeting with the King of England in England was the highest and most obvious political fraud I’ve seen or heard in my life. It’s hard to see anything more stark than that,” he added.
However, Gonçalves said Lee Cocker was “small talk.”
“And he’s getting looser by the day, obviously the long-term opposition must have numbed his brain,” said Goncalves, whose Solidarity Labour party has been in power for 21 consecutive years.
“As is known to all, as did King Charles III himself, I am not in favour of a monarchy in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, nor a British or foreigner as head of state in our country,” he said, noting that this did not mean he could not be with him Sovereign exchange. “[But] I must be respected. “
“So, it’s not that I don’t approve of the monarchy, I just have no respect for the king or the British monarch. That’s stupid; it’s childish.”
Gonçalves further stated that the king was the nominal head of state of the federation, except here that the monarch was the viceroy as his representative.
“The Commonwealth is important to him and he has said publicly that Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is a member of the Commonwealth,” he said.
In a 2009 referendum, Goncalves’ government failed to persuade voters to remove the British monarch as head of state in favor of a non-executive president.
