City officials in Phoenix and Tempe are going head-to-head with the Arizona Coyotes Arena and Recreation District proposal.
TEMPE, Ariz. — The city of Tempe has accused its neighbor Phoenix of using alarmist tactics to block the development of new apartment complexes.
Tempe Mayor Corey Woods condemned the flyer that Sky Harbor Airport mailed to Tempe residents about a proposed entertainment development east of the airport.
“As the mayor of Tempe, I oppose this alarmist strategy,” Mayor Woods wrote in a public statement Friday. “Our region is known for cooperation and responsible action. It’s unprecedented for neighboring cities to fill their mailboxes with comments about unsanctioned developments.”
Phoenix has warned in the past that Tempe’s proposed plan does Bad ride with Sky Harbor Airport.
Tempe proposes to build a huge Recreation area around the new Arizona Coyotes Arena There are hotels, retail, condos and theaters in the Priest Drive and Rio Salado Parkway area.
“We are very concerned about this development as it is incompatible with our continued operations at the airport. Therefore, we are asking the City of Tempe to reconsider this,” said Chad Makovsky, Sky Harbor Director of Air Services.
Apartment dwellers will tire of plans to fly overhead every 60 seconds during peak hours, Makovsky said, claiming the development violates a 1994 agreement between the two cities.
Tempe Mayor Corey Woods called the claims “outrageous” and “inaccurate.”
“People interested in living in the proposed location will be well informed before making a decision — just like the thousands of other Tempe Lake residents who have chosen to live in areas with aircraft noise,” Woods said in the statement. “
Woods plans to meet with Sky Harbor officials next week. Community meetings are also planned.
No development agreement has been reached with the proponent and negotiations are ongoing.
