[WARNING: The following contains MAJOR spoilers for The Walking Dead Season 11 episode 18, “A New Deal.”]
everything you need to throw walking deadThe final minutes in question were a Pacer bite.
To be fair, no one is entirely sure how the show will be done. However, with Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Negan’s duo (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Carroll’s (Melissa McBride) heavily implies survival, and it appears that all front- and mid-rank characters will come out alive. This is not the case in the comics. Given the final minutes of the New Deal, one of the biggest deaths in source material won’t translate to TV. It all comes down to Sebastian (Teo Rapp-Olsson), who bled after his neck was ripped open by a walker in this week’s episode.
That’s why New Taiwan DollarThe most hated character has the potential to be one of its most important, and how his absence affects the ending.
What did Sebastian do?
Don’t let it twist – in the comics, Sebastian is still a real human fart. He’s still Pamela’s arrogant, obnoxious, rude son, and he’s still going to make life hard for the protagonists once they reach the Commonwealth. Key difference? In the comics, Sebastian’s fatal. He fully believes in the philosophy of the Commonwealth of rich and poor, and when Rick’s team disrupts that status quo, he sees it as a personal contempt. (Rick appears in the Commonwealth chapter in the comics, as does Carl; Carl’s death and Rick’s “death” do not occur in the source material.)
Sebastian accused Rick of being responsible for the Commonwealth’s strides towards equality, which he did not, despite his eagerness to remain “above” everyone else. In the middle of the night, Sebastian sneaked into Rick’s room and shot him in the chest, killing him. The heartbreaking moment was made worse when Carl discovered his father’s resurrected body in the morning. Sebastian is a bit like Negan, who has been imprisoned for the rest of his life. Unlike Negan, he did not receive a redemption arc.
Why does this matter to the end?
Given that Rick is trapped in CRM at this point (or so we assume), there is little risk of him dying at Sebastian’s hands. But a lot of fans do want Sebastian to kill someone. Once theories ranged from Negan to Lille to Aaron (Ross Marquand), given that Aaron is very similar to the comic Rick. Now, it seems that no one will finally accept this iconic death.
It’s worth mentioning that a version of this death could still happen even without Sebastian. But if not, it’s not the first time New Taiwan Dollar Opt out of a major comic ending. After all, in the comics, both Lori and Judith died when the Governor raided the prison. But it has extra meaning because it was the last major death, and it happened to the most important character. Rick’s death was huge and controversial. The show chose to leave the box unchecked as a clear indicator that the screen might deviate from pages involving conclusions. We’ll have to wait and see what other changes come as the final episodes air.
