Global public cloud adoption leaders face multiple challenges
Veritas Technologies, a global leader in data protection and multi-cloud data management, announced the results of its international cloud survey (see box) at the ongoing Gitex Global in Dubai (10-14 October).
“Research shows that UAE organisations have made tremendous progress in their transition to the cloud, ranking second among global adopters of public cloud services. However, there are many more to ensure the data they move to the cloud is protected, compliant and available There’s work to be done,” said Johnny Karam, Managing Director and Vice President, International Emerging Regions, Veritas Technologies.
“We surveyed more than 1,500 information technology (IT) decision makers in 12 countries, including 100 respondents from the UAE, and found that more than half (53%) of organizations in the country do not fully understand their data ,”He says.
“The adoption of a multi-cloud provider strategy has exacerbated the opaque understanding of where data is stored, with the average enterprise in the UAE currently using three different public cloud providers for their storage needs. This, in turn, undermines data protection strategies, 53% Of the UAE companies surveyed said they consistently use data protection solutions built into these cloud services. Although more than half (56%) said these tools put their organisations at risk,” he said.
“Veritas opened its first office in the Middle East 22 years ago in 2000. Today, more than 80,000 customers – including 95% of the ‘Fortune 100’ – rely on us to abstract IT complexity and simplify data management,” Karam said.
“To fully leverage their cloud leadership, the next step for UAE organisations is to prioritise securing data in their multi-cloud environments and closing any vulnerability gaps,” he added.
Findings
- UAE ranks second in public cloud adoption at 34%, China at 37%
- More than half (53%) of UAE respondents no longer understand their entire data footprint, making them vulnerable to cyberattacks
- 56% agree that relying solely on their cloud provider’s security tools puts their organization at risk, and 35% report suffering financial losses from paying a ransom to cyber attackers
- Veritas urges organizations to adopt a unified approach to data management for their multi-cloud, hybrid environments
